Spring Cleaning Tips for Seniors

Spring will be here before you know it, and the warmer weather and promise of summer often give motivation for a fresh start. That usually comes in the form of spring cleaning and want to get rid of some of the unnecessary clutter. Here are some helpful tips for making the process of spring cleaning easy for a senior citizen.

Ask for help.

Dont tackle this chore alone. Ask for help from your loved ones. Not only will it make cleaning more efficient, but its also a great bonding time to share memories, look through photo albums, and pass on trinkets to your children or grandchildren. Those young grandchildren can help by dusting, throwing things out, or vacuuming instead of handling delicate items.

Make a spring checklist.

Once your help has arrived, make a checklist of those things you want to get done. Sanitizing, organizing rooms, replacing books to their bookshelves, going through the curio cabinet, dusting, mopping, cleaning windows, etc can all be tasks that can be split up by age and ability. By making a list and marking off items, your spring cleaning will get done in no time. Some other items that often get overlooked include:

  • Removing expired or old medications to be disposed of properly.
  • Getting rid of old food from the refrigerator or pantry.
  • Replacing batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Changing burned-out lightbulbs

Eliminate the clutter.

If youre like many senior citizens, youve been collecting treasures for a long time. Its no doubt that among your lifes adventures and travels youve accumulated trinkets, clocks, jewelry, vases, and a million other things that store happy and lifelong memories. You may decide that its time to cut down on those items by either packing them away or handing them down to loved ones. Other types of clutter are things weve picked up during the previous year. For those items, make a yes, no, or maybe pile. Old clothes, used magazines, crosswords, books, and other items can all be designated to a pile to determine those youre willing to part with, donate, or throw out.
